I hate men who are afraid of women’s strength

― Anaïs Nin

Welcome to this week’s Poetry 1o1 Rehab Prompt.  The first of 2016.

My prompt this week is FEM.

I have tried, and, perhaps in doing so, skated on thin ice, to write from a perspective different than my own. I may, or may not, have achieved that. No doubt, I will find out soon enough.

So, this week, write a poem to describe what it means to be feminine, in your world, or in some other (part of the) world; or, take a different spin from the post and write about something from the perspective of another person, or, if the fancy takes you, something not even human.

And in doing so. Show no mercy.

I am.

Like you.

I am.
I have two legs, two arms,
two eyes.
A brain (with two sides),
just like you.

I want, and need,
like you, more than,
you.
I can do, all you can,
and more.

(than you can)

I am,
woman.
I can.
I do.
I need,
no rescue.

(by you)

I need.
No.
Mercy.

I am,
human

(and you?)

  1. I love how the poem is simple yet very captivating. And I feel that the simplicity says a lot about feminism itself as gender equality is something basic the world should already have, instead of it being something people should strive for.

  2. I like the poem. It does not matter whether one is male or female, we all have the same basic needs, likes and dislikes and wants. The words are simple but the message that is brought out is powerful. I have responded to this challenge as well.

  3. I love this challenge of feminism and how you represented it in your poem. It was simple and meaningful at the same time and I love how it ended with “I am human, and you?.” You did a great job with this challenge I may have to try my hand at it.

  4. Wow… That only took me about fifteen minutes. Turning on my computer, writing it down and then blogging it :O
That’s a rare one for me.
But I guess it’s because your prompt is just great Andy 😀

  5. Very interesting and challenging prompt – apologies that I had nothing intelligent to convey and stuck with skating! I’ve yet to meet anyone (male or female) who can explain ‘feminism’ to me in a way I can understand(!) so I usually try to avoid the topic, if at all possible! More to read to yet but those I’ve seen so far are great – I might’ve already said I enjoyed your take on the prompt too 🙂
